Moving On Up

We finally went out and got some step stools to help Lily get up to the sink to wash her hands and brush her teeth. She loves to climb, and I think it gives her an extra feeling of independence. It sure is better on my back - she's getting so big!

I think Lily is ready to start potty training. She's definitely showing interest. And I think she could do it based on the stuff I've read in books. I'm NOT ready! I'd rather change a diaper than deal with the mess I am sure to encounter with the whole process of learning to use the toilet especially since it's not really my house to mess up. I think I will wait at least until after the camping trip we are planning in May. Just hoping she will not start shedding her diaper on her own before that!

Here are some photos of Miss Independence brushing her own teeth:

Helping Mama bake some chocolate chip cookies: (Love that cheesy grin!)

And with the garden cart Mike got to push Lily around in: (or for gardening...)

Mind boggling babies and the beach

Children. It blows my mind how fast they grow, how quickly they absorb information and gain new skills. It is so cool for me to see my little niece Audrey and realize that almost exactly a year ago Lily was that age going through similar stages. It's crazy to think that in so short a time, just 3 or 4 months, Audrey will be a year old and walking! And Lily will be 2!!! It's also crazy that at times Lily's communication is limited to single words and gestures, and other times she busts out with: "Momma, would you please put my tiger balloon in the bag?"

We took Lily to the beach Saturday and then went to Ruby's on the pier afterward - one of our favorite places to eat out in San Diego. Mike spontaneously got her a balloon animal while we waited for our food. She looked at it kind of askance at first, and Mike thought he had wasted his money getting this Tigger balloon for himself, but as we walked back up the pier it grew on her (Even if it doesn't look that way in the picture.). It was so cute to see it waving out of her stroller clutched in her tiny hand with the setting sun making it glow brighter orange as the sky in front of us darkened.

Lily's been sort of sick for a few weeks now and Mike's been extra busy with work so we hadn't gotten out of the house much. It had been so long since we've been to the beach I would think Lily had forgotten what the beach was, but she asks to go there regularly. She loves it!!! Since it's still kind of cold we just planned to play in the sand, but Oh no! - Lily had to go in the water! There wasn't a lot we could do to keep her out of it, so our trip to the beach was cut kind of short. We let her play a little and then got her cleaned up and in dry clothes in the sun warmed car and headed out to Ruby's. It was a really nice day, and I don't think her little jaunt in the waves made her sicker. We were up most of Saturday night with her cough, but she napped really well Sunday, checked out ok with her doctor Monday, and she seems to be improving each day.

Lily's long nap on Sunday gave me some time to write down some of the things she's been saying lately to remember. Lily is 20 months old for the record. She talks really well. I guess my ear is in tune to her - so maybe people who aren't around her all the time don't always understand, but I understand almost everything she says and she's getting into clearer and more complex sentences now. Sometimes she doesn't fully say a complete sentence, but she leaves a little pause in there for the conjunction so it sounds like it was there. She understands so much, she is teaching me not to underestimate what I can teach her even though she's so small. Lately her big questions are:

"What's that noise?" (wuz dat noise) Usually the answer is a subtle sound around the house like an airplane overhead, water rushing through the pipes, or someone walking on a creaky floor board overhead. And -

"What's wrong?" Sometimes nothing is wrong, sometimes we are tired or stressed out parents. Earlier last week I was talking to Mike about Lily being sick and what to do about something related to that. Lily pipes up in the dark from the pillow beside me where I thought she was sleeping..."What's wrong?" I told her nothing was wrong, but she knew something was troubling me. She said, "Don't worry, Momma!" She is seriously the sweetest kid. I love her "big hugs." She'll say "Momma, Big hug?" and wrap her little arms around my neck. She has the cutest voice for saying I love you.

And I never thought OK could sound so cute or have so many syllables. She can be so sweetly obedient and agreeable, but she is definitely testing her boundaries, and asserting her independence these days, too! A week or so ago she threw a tantrum for me about wanting to take her clothes off. I tried to turn it into a lesson about how she should talk if she wants me to pay attention. We made some progress. She told me very clearly that she wanted to take off her skirt! She rarely wears a skirt, but she knew what it was! She did it again for Mike later on. I'm sure it will take some time for the lesson to sink in and for us to know exactly how to handle it. It's extra hard when she sick because crying makes her nose and throat worse, and she's more disagreeable because she feels so lousy, but you don't want to just give in to get her to stop crying because that just teaches her to cry more for what she wants. I try to not give in, but give extra love. It's hard.

Lily has come up with a new way to say No! "Octopus, Octopus!" Not really sure where she made that connection, but that's something she yells when she wants us to stop doing something. I wonder if the bulb syringe makes her think of an octopus with one leg because she hates getting her boogers sucked - and maybe she's passed it on to any time she doesn't want us to do something to her... Just a guess...She used to call 'rainbow' when she wanted us to open the arched zipper on her crib tent. So funny to wonder how she comes up with this stuff.

She's been singing 'Rock-A-Bye-Baby' to herself - skipping when the wind blows and jumping straight to the bough breaking, cradle falling verse. She sounded like she was trying to sing herself back to sleep during her nap the other day. I still sing her to sleep most nights - it helps relax her and keep her from chatting when it's time to sleep. Sometimes I have to remind her it's time to sleep and it's so funny to see her turn away and close her eyes tight really fast like she's thinking: Oops, I forgot - I'm sleeping, mom! I swear! When she wants me to sing 'My Favorite Things' she asks for "Dog Bites" I got tired of that one for awhile because I sang it so much when she was first born, but it's back by request. She also loves Popcorn Popping, and can do a decent Hoky Poky. I love to see her dancing - it seems like she's taken forever to get a real interest in it - probably because I looked forward to seeing her do it so much :) She gets in the mood to copy what you do or say at times and it's so fun to run with it. It's a lot of work raising kids, but it can sure be a lot of fun!

Garden Girl

Well...don't really know about that yet...but she sure does like dirt.

Lily had a blast helping us weed the areas in my parents yard that will soon be our garden. I am actually a little worried that she'll be sad when we do get the plants in because she won't be able to play in it anymore. Here's a few pictures I took of her out in the yard the other day in her cute blue shirt and overalls. (She actually has enough hair now for a single back ponytail! Mike is insistent I let her bangs grow out - hence the side bow. They are totally in her face without it.)
Looking out for worms.
Happy with her wee yellow flower.

Just happy.

Such a classic Lily face.

Digging in!

Almost as good as the beach. The reason we will need to build up a barricade to grow anything. Who knew dirt could keep a child so happily occupied for such a long time...?

...As long as mom is around to rescue her from worms and scurrying bugs now and again... Do you see the nervous concentration? She has the cutest voice for calling 'Help, Help!' I just had to brush her off and she was good to go.

Mike went to town the other day getting the weeds out. We got our seeds in the mail and some peat pots to start some in. Now all we need is a truckload of manure to liven things up a bit and we'll be good to go! Mike came across a little garden cart tonight at Costco that will be perfect for unloading that, and wheeling Lily around in. They trucked it all over the store because Lily was happier riding in that than in the shopping cart. Mike got some pretty funny looks and comments, but he and Lily were having a blast so that's all we cared about. Wish I'd had my camera on me! It was pretty cute and funny to see her little eyes peeking out over that thing as Mike wheeled it about the store.

For a friend

Some houses try to hide the fact
That children shelter there,
Ours boasts it quite openly,
The signs are everywhere.

For smears are on the windows,
Little smudges on the door,
I should apologize, I guess,
For toys strewn on the floor.

But I sat down with the children,
And we laughed & played & read,
And if the doorbell doesn’t shine,
Their eyes will shine instead.

For when at times I'm forced to choose,
The one job or the other,
I want to be a housewife,
But first I’ll be a Mother.

I love this poem. My mom has a framed copy. When I was little I actually memorized it and used to act it out in the living room with my dolls. It is funny that now that I am a mom I feel like I don't follow it's message enough. Our house is no sparkling palace, but I feel like I let housework take priority over playing with Lily a little too often. It's definitely a hard thing to balance. She does need to see examples of work and learn to take care of a home herself one day. Plus doesn't everyone feel better and more at peace in a clean environment? Does that sound like justification? Confession: Sometimes it's like a break to clean. Sounds strange, I know, but it's hard to be playmate to an active toddler for extended periods of time. It can be fun, but it can also get boring. Sometimes I feel like just being in the same room with her wipes me out. Cleaning can sometimes be relaxing. We probably need to get out more :)

I definitely care about being a better mom than housewife - though I do believe in taking care of my home and that teaching children to is an important life-lesson. I really want my focus to be my children and enjoying time with the people I love so they have no doubt about where they stand in my list of priorities.

I like this quote by Marjorie Pay Hinckley that someone else shared with the friend I posted this poem for:

"I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbors children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived."

I think I want to have the sticky kisses and tears, without getting the peanut butter all over my clothes, completely letting go of my appearance or not having time to wash my hands thoroughly after weeding that garden. My heart is in the right place. I really don't care for a sports car or perfect manicure, is that good enough? Hopefully :)

Anyway, with this I want to remember this scripture which my friend shared on her blog:

"And verily I say unto thee that thou shalt lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better." Doctrine & Covenants 25:10

That pretty much means letting go of the day to day drudge, or the day to day dazzle - whatever your distractions may be - because cultivating characteristics and relationships that can last eternally is way more important. Shining eyes, Lissy!

We love you Grandma Elsie!!

We had the pleasure of having Mike's mom out for a short visit recently. She hadn't seen Lily since she was born but they took to each other right away. She is the sweetest lady and we wish we could live closer and see her more often. Her birthday coincides with Spring and she is as sweet as spring sunshine. This post is for you!

Elsie introduced Lily to her first worm. They had fun picking flowers and playing with toys in the backyard.
She joined in with Lily's perpetual tea parties and let Lily drag her wherever she wanted to go.
Lily usually clings to me like crazy when anyone new is around. Not so with Grandma Elsie - they were buds from the get go!

Mike was happy to have his mom here for his birthday - I think that was probably his best present!
Three generations say cheese!

 We love you, Grandma Elsie!!!
