A Christmas Gift and a Milestone

The Day After Christmas:

We decided to get a new bed for Lily for Christmas.

Kind of a last minute gift. We had planned to leave her in her crib as long as we possibly could while we were still in this house, but the one thing you should come to expect when you have kids is things don't always go as planned.

Lily's been breaking out of her crib tent when we put her in it for time out now for several weeks - the zipper just isn't holding anymore (and a new one ain't cheap). So we've been putting her in time out just loose in our room. I felt kind of bad that she couldn't climb onto her own bed to lay down during time outs if she wanted to. One day I asked her: "Lily, do you want to get a new bed that you can climb off and onto by yourself?" Lily replied with a gung-ho: "Yeah! Let's go get one, right now!" Well, I looked on craigslist and at different stores online and found a toddler bed brand new only $50 that almost exactly matched the style of her old baby crib. I couldn't find a used one for that cheap! We could still use her crib mattress -- a larger bed just wouldn't fit in our room. I thought if Lily got her new bed for a Christmas present it would make it even more special and ease the transition all the more. Lily is too smart for us though, however discreet we tried to be at the store, she knew what was on the bottom rack of the cart. At bath time that night she asked me, "Mom, where's my new bed?" ("Huh?") "Where's my new bed that you bought me at the store?" I told her we were saving it for Christmas so she would have to wait a few days and we would hide it until then. What else could I say!? :) She accepted it very well, and was so excited to see the bed box with a big bow on it behind the love-seat on Christmas morning!

We waited until the day after Christmas to put the bed together because the reviews I read said it was a little tough to assemble. They were right, but we got it together after some pretty tricky maneuvering that seeing us try you never would have thought would work.

Lily was excited to help at first, but I took over for her when it got a little tough for one man and a two year old.

Mike and I took down the crib and set up the new bed, and in came Lily to check it out. Here she is showing her initial excitement! She was bouncing all over it swinging around her stuffed animals, but those pictures were all blurry so this is what you get :)

She looks so teenager-like here - Like totally...watch out!

She's oh so cute in her little bed!

So far it's been great even though we've been a little sick. She's such a tumbler in the night I've been expecting her to fall out, but so far so good! The side rails don't look very high with the mattress in, but it must be enough to keep her aware of the edge. We were all a little extra wakeful the first night, I think, just not sure what to expect. She is no longer contained! It's a little scary, but it's probably good for her to develop a little extra independence. She seems to love her little bed and is still excited about it, but this morning she sat up in bed and said, her face crumpling into a cry, "I want my crib!" She came over to me and got a big hug, and so far she hasn't mentioned it again. She told me as I tucked her in tonight that she fell out last night and bumped her head, but I guess she just got back in and went back to sleep! Don't worry, I put pillows all around so she couldn't get hurt. A big girl bed, and next week preschool! My baby isn't a baby anymore!

Here are a couple more photos from the day after Christmas when Evie came over to play while Andrew was fixing the kitchen sink. (So glad that waited to break until after Christmas! Even more glad to have a nice brother like Andrew who knew what to do to fix it!)

Bath time!

Lily and her new baby doll!

Love this cute girl!

PJ Time: So sweet to see Evie brushing Lily's hair.

These two are the cutest friends!

Christmas Day 2010

So not expecting this first reaction!

Lily Christmas 2010

Daddy daughter love.

Lily wouldn't sit with me! ...But she was excited to touch the Christmas star!
Ha ha - got her!
Mom and daughter

It's stocking time!
Can you stand the excitement!?

It possibly took Lily longer to get everything out of her stocking (one thing at a time) than it did for her to open her presents! We finally got her to hold the toe and dump it - it was packed!

Lily started out slow opening presents... Oh, she ripped right into them - she just took time opening and examining each one...until she got warmed up!
Next!

Serious present opener.

What!? Not for me!?

Searching for more.
Gotta love the Christmas booty!

Yay for play-doh! Everyday at some point in the day Lily asks, "What else can we do today?" If you ask her what she wants to do she'll usually say, "Hmm.....(shrugging shoulders and lifting her eyebrows with a hopeful look) play play-doh!?"

Lily's first dolly with hair! Thanks, Grandma!
Playtime!
Mike getting his play-doh on!

Mom's helper scooping sugar from the can to the bin. Lily kept repeating "Scoop... pour... scoop... pour." She had so much fun helping, especially when she thought mom wasn't looking! Time to wash hands, again!

Trying to get a quick picture by the tree before the cousins arrive. There's the doorbell!...and she's off!

Checking out Evie's marshmallow shooter...

And trying on Evie's new slippers.

Even Uncle Mike was interested in Isaac's leapfrog explorer.

Crawling around on the floor with Audrey. Classic contrast of emotion shots - love these!
Contrary to what it might seem - Lily did not make Audrey cry. Audrey got upset when her mama said no to her crawling in the kitchen. Oh, the drama of being told No!

Singing Happy Birthday to Jesus and blowing out the candle on the cake!

We had a wonderful Christmas! Actually two! Still have more to post later from our visit with Mike's family. Hope you all had a great Christmas too!

The Night Before Christmas

Christmas Eve is my favorite, as I'm sure I have said before... The anticipation and the family gathering for a fun night of traditions and the spirit of Christmas just can't be beat. We had a really fun Christmas Eve this year with 5 grandkids and all of my family gathered together at Grandma & Grandpa's to celebrate!

The morning was fun and relaxing with Lily entertaining herself by the Christmas tree, while Mike drew images for his recent children's book idea, and I baked my favorite Christmas cookies (peanut butter snaps with Hershey kisses) and Chimichangas for everyone coming over later that night.

 My little cookie helper.

We ate good food and the kids decorated sugar cookies and ran around the house like crazy glad to be all together!

My mom read a children's Christmas story and miraculously all 5 grandkids gathered round - for quite a lot of it!

Isaac and Audrey got into their pajamas before heading home and had a little pajama party with Lily.

Isaac found this knitted scarf wrapped around a stuffed animal reindeer and thought it was pretty cool.

Lily thought it was cool too so she decided to try to take it from him.

Tug o war!

Guess who won!? :)

Cousins are fun!
